The 68-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra is pleased to announce it will present a free community concert Sunday May 7 at 3 PM. The Arts for Life concert will feature the orchestra, conducted by music director Mitch Glickman with special guest trumpeter and composer Keyon Harrold performing his original music. There will also be a post-concert discussion with Keyon Harrold as part of the Carpenter Center’s “Voices for Justice: Equity & Arts” series moderated by CSULB Prof. Ray Briggs.
Harrold is probably best known for his trumpet playing in Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. The soundtrack to the film won the GRAMMY® Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. Named by Rolling Stone as one of “Ten New Artists You Need to Know,” he has released two critically acclaimed jazz solo albums and has appeared on albums by such notables as Jay-Z, Beyonce, 50 Cent, Rihanna, and Mary J. Blige, among many others.
Also on the program is the world premiere of Daniel Szabo’s “The Shift.” Mr. Szabo was the winner of the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra Commissioning Competition in 2018. The concert will open with music from Los Angeles composer Edgar Redmond (1928-1984), founder of the Modern String Ensemble.
