About the event
SJO is pleased to announce that the 68-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra will present a free community concert Sunday, November 12th at 6 PM at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach. The Symphonic Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Mitch Glickman, will perform a special concert honoring the life of legendary composer/arranger Don Sebesky with special guest, NEA Jazz Master flutist Hubert Laws. The program will include Don's arrangements of "Amazing Grace," and "Malagueña," along with his work "Sebastian's Theme."
Internationally renowned flutist Hubert Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres; moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. He has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, with the orchestras of Los Angeles, Dallas, Cleveland, Amsterdam, and Japan. He has given annual performances at Carnegie Hall, and has performed sold out performances in the Hollywood Bowl with fellow flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. In addition, he has appeared at the Montreux, Playboy, and Kool Jazz festivals and performed with the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Hollywood Bowl.
Also on the program is the world premiere of a commissioned work from composer Christopher Zuar, winner of the 7th annual George Duke Commissioning Prize.
Tickets are free but reservations are required.
