John was the principal bassist in the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (The Netherlands) from 1980-1984. Bevan Manson

Composer/arranger/pianist Bevan Manson has arranged and composed music for various jazz artists including Manhattan Transfer vocalist Cheryl Bentyne, and Village Vanguard Orchestra saxophonist Gary Smulyan. Over the years, he has performed with musicians such as Ira Sullivan, Ron Jones L.A. Big Band, Tierney Sutton, Jimmy Guiffre, and his own jazz trios. Bevan has received commissions from Sierra Chamber Music, the Pacific Philharmonic Foundation, the San Francisco Symphony, and among others. "I wrote Iwataki to depict in musical form a day in the inner life of one of Los Angeles’s most beloved yet often invisible members of its musical community. Sterling scoring mixers such as Mr. Iwataki don’t get all the attention they deserve. Iwataki is a musical voyage taking us through what I imagine might be the challenging, even menacing possibilities in sound choices in the some heroic decisions, the trials and tribulations of mix after mix submitted, some insightful compromises, sonic triumphs, and some post-mix reflection. There are two main themes. The secondary theme slowly appears first in various versions, after a timbre-oriented introduction. Solo clarinet emerges out of the orchestral texture to ‘egg on’ the orchestra, leading into the primary theme stated by the clarinet, over tympani and percussion rhythms. We are then in big band land with the primary theme transformed into jazz for a while, with a solo by tenor sax. More working out follows, with lyrical moments given to the strings and French horns." -Bevan Manson

About the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra

Founded in 2002, the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra is a non-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating the uniquely American genre of symphonic jazz through its commissioning program, and inspiring the next generation through its “Music in the Schools” program. We bring much-needed TK through 8th grade music education to classrooms throughout Los Angeles County. “Music in the Schools” focuses on schools in under-resourced neighborhoods, and teaches rhythm, note reading, solfege, music culture and history weekly through our year-long program. Our curriculum integrates with and enhances students’ understanding of math, reading, science, history, and creative writing.

The 68-member SJO has performed in concerts throughout Southern California including the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, Royce Hall (UCLA), Ford Amphitheatre, San Gabriel Mission Playhouse and the Walt Disney Theatre at CalArts. Special guests joining the orchestra have included Bill Cunliffe, George Duke, Peter Erskine, Dave Grusin, Christian McBride, Raul Midon, Lee Ritenour, Luciana Souza, Ernie Watts and The Yellowjackets. In 2015, the SJO released its debut recording featuring commissioned works by George Duke and Lee Ritenour, along with a performance of “Rhapsody in Blue” with Bill Cunliffe.

The SJO is comprised of Southern California’s finest studio, concert and jazz musicians. This all-star band consists of members and former members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony and New York Philharmonic. They have performed and toured with such legendary bands and performers as Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Lady Gaga and Barbra Streisand and perform for Hollywood’s top film and television composers.
